Yeah, I definately think this game is worth $30. It's way more fun than Top Spin 2.
I just played my coworker's copy this morning and this game is amazing.
The game is bare-bones, but the visuals and gameplay are fantastic. Just amazing. The atmosphere and sounds a fantastic as well. Just a great game with great controls that is always fun, especially with friends.
Don't spend $40, buy it online or at Fry's for $30.

$30 from Fry's but you get raped for shipping. It still comes out cheaper than $40, though. I should be picking this up shortly.
Okay so I bought it yesterday (God bless Fry's - $29.99) and played for a couple of hours. So far, I really like it. There's no dicking around with "create a player," and there aren't a whole lot of game types -- just exhiibition, tournament, online, and training. What it lacks in features it makes up in polish and gameplay. Very clean, sharp graphics; absolutely perfect sound effects; and great ping pong ball physics. I found that the controls took a little getting used to -- L analog controls player movement; the 4 basic spins are mapped to face buttons (alternatively, you can push the R stick to achieve the same spins); ball placement is then controlled with the L analog; and you have hard and soft "focus" shots that are performed in conjunction with the L/R triggers and L/R bumpers.
The controls are not too much different than that of Top Spin and Virtua Tennis, but the action is much quicker and more intense than those games, and your reflexes (or at least my aging reflexes) will be tested. Depending on the opponent's shot, you may have only an instant to detect the spin on it (cleverly depicted by a colored aura surrounding the ball that corresponds to the face buttons) and respond accordingly -- do you counterspin (i.e., use the same spin as the incoming return), attempt to forcefully move the opponent out of position, or maybe surprise him with a soft back spin that drops right over the net? As with a a lot of good games, this one is fairly easy to pick up and play, but I expect it will take some time to master.
Early reports say the online play is butter smooth, and I will see for myself tonight.
"Fiends! Animals! Bastards!"
this is the next game on my to-buy list.
This will be purchased by Friday.
Master. I expect to see you online.
Wow this sounds really, truly awesome. IGN only gave it a 7.8. but then praised the dickens out of it. I don't know how they judge games (judging by their review history it's pretty lax) but I don't think a game like this, spending more time on getting mechanics right than pushing the mode limits, should be penalized.

I can't get over how well this game plays. The career mode in Top Spin 2 was a bore, but this game is a blast. I said before that this game is worth $30, but I wouldn't feel ripped off paying $40. It's good.

BTW: Liu Ping is for cheaters. Holding the paddle "pen-style" is for communists. "Hand-shake" grip is the way to go. Dirty commies.
How many characters are there to choose from? What are the "bare-bones" modes like? Are there different arenas? A tutorial mode?
