Thread: Gaming habit problem

  1. No one on TNL actually plays games anymore.

  2. Yeesh Yoshi, got enough rage in ya? I've been enjoying the DC quite a bit lately. Amazingly, a lot of the stuff I've been playing are DC exclusives like Last Blade 2, Fatal Fury: MoW, Fire ProWrestling D, JGR, and SF III: Double Impact - all of them are good for quick play.

That's because everyone on TNL grew up.

    School/Career or games?

    All three, Brisco.

I can see where you are coming from, because the majority of games that came out for the DC were eventually released on the PS2, Xbox, or Cube. However, that does not give you the right to assume that my opinion is just nostalgic bull shit. I can honestly say that the Dreamcast era still stands as the best time I have PERSONALLY ever had with video games. However, at the time I bought my Dreamcast I never owned a Playstation 1 and I had no intentions on buying a PS2. Therefore, after the Nintendo 64 was "dead" I spent the next two years playing nothing but Dreamcast games (I didn't get a PS2 until well into the systems life span), and those two years were the best I have ever had playing video games.

Plus, some of my favorite Dreamcast games are still exclusives (as far as I know) including:

Cannon Spike, Gunbird 2, Zero Gunner 2, Border Down, Mars Matrix, Illbleed (YES, this game is very underrated...one of my all time favorites), Sword of the Berserk: Guts Rage, Virtua Fighter 3: TB, Super Magnetic Neo (EXCELLENT Platformer), Shenmue, House of the Dead 2, Typing of the Dead, Zombie Revenge, Gigawing 1 and 2, Metropolis Street Racer, Elemental Gimmick Gear, Power Stone 1 & 2, Wacky Races, Confidential Mission, and Soul Calibur.

Moreover, the DC still has my favorite (and in some cases BEST) versions of:

Bangai-O, Skies of Arcadia, Grandia II, Marvel vs Capcom 1 and 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, Crazi Taxi 1 and 2, Mark of the Wolves, King of Fighters: Dream Match 98, Last Blade 2, Capcom vs SNK 1 and 2, Daytona USA, Phantasy Star Online, Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Dead or Alive 2, and JET GRIND RADIO (Jet Set Radio Future was crap).

Overall, I believe that I have good reasons why I "love" the Dreamcast era of gaming, and my opinion about the system is not just nostalgia and bull shit. I highly enjoy every game that I listed above, and those games made the Dreamcast a great system for me.

I also stand by my "pick up and play" opinion about the DC as well. The majority of the games I listed for the DC lean more towards the fun arcade style of gaming and less towards the 30+ hour one play through games.

mine is something of a variation of this, i used to be a jrpg nut, then i played morrowind, now, with the exception of tales of symphonia and the mario rpg's(paper and the 2 ds ones) and maybe the shadow hearts series, the jrpg has lost a lot of its magic. Theres something to be said for having a story that didnt have to suffer translation and transplantation of cultural landmarks, the 2 kotors, fable and ironicly jade empire reinforced this. I suppose i should get around to finishing fallout and planescape torment, the graphics wont hold up, but storylines do much better in their original language.

I have not, so I'm taking advantage of what little time I have left. Besides, I think anyone has the time to play games as long as they are efficient in their work. I end up fine with full-time school and work. Just saying...

I don't think I've beaten a jrpg since TOS, and that was hard to do around the end. The plot and gameplay in jrpg are so fucking tired these days. If you've played the original Lunar 1 and 2 and all the FFs up to 7, you've seen just about ever jrpg plot, ever. I'll get one, and play it for 6 hours straight and then never touch it again.

I don't have any idea why it is like this either. Some of ideas for new rpgs are pretty obvious. Like why not more female leads? Why can't I be evil and raise an empire? Why not a world like WWII? Why not a RPG world but shooter levels between towns? Why not a mature and/or adult plot? How about only intense boss fights that require strategy? Why no full on horror rpgs, or comedies? Why no Zelda stylized mmorpgs? Why Japan? Why can you not see the fucking obvious?

Anyway, I don't play games at school. I won't beat a game, but I will play it one time for six hours. That kind of screws up the rest of the week for me.
