Yup. Earlier, especially during his two mini series, he actually has a suprising amount of depth. Now, he's just a braindead clown.

When do I think they ruined Deadpool? The very first issue of his regular series, that's when. Previously, Deadpool would kill anyone, for any reason, with no problem. But in issue one of his own book, suddenly he got a conscience. He didn't want to kill people any more. He'd risk his life to save others. He wanted to reform himself and be a good guy. And thus, Deadpool started to suck instantly.

As the series went on, it only got worse. The stories got way too campy and silly. Deadpool became an even bigger pussy- I mean, he wouldn't even shoot or stab people anymore. Yeah, he was still funny, but it was his humor combined with his cold-blooded killer persona that I was into. This "clean" version of DP just came across as a lame Spiderman wanna-be. I gave up and stopped it reading ages ago.

I figured that's where someone would stop liking DP, didn't want to outright say it. I'm with Will. And the two mini-series, at least the first one for sure, they planted the seeds of him having a conscience. The whole 'I'm not a worthless killing machine, watch me heal Copycat' thing. Probably where they got the idea for DP goes good guy.

The good thing about the Joe Kelly run, is he'd try to be the good guy, and fail miserably. His turn with Typhoid Mary was pretty brutal.

Then again, I was going for the comedy, and the DP/Agent X series had a lot of it, except for the group of issues between 45ish and late 50 something. #11, I think, the Gumping issue with the Spiderman spoof was comedy gold.

Cable/Deadpool just kinda blows. It's more like CABLE/deadpool. He was also introduced in X-Force, btw. /nitpick

While I can't really vouch for Cable and Deadpool as being the best characterization of Deadpool (although I do enjoy it on a base level and Fabian Nicieza who basically created him writes it), I thought he had a suprising amount of depth in the Joe Kelly stuff. And like portnoyd said, he's still a bastard since he keeps this old lady locked up in some shithole house and fucks with his friend Weasel like all the time. He also tends to realize that he can't be a hero in the same vein as the others because of his fucked up past which I thought was cool.
