Thread: Cell Phone Gaming?

  1. #11
My cell phone tetris kicks ass, but its biggest flaw is no level skip. I can't stand playing for half an hour just to get up to a difficult part.

  2. I wanted to start a thread like this for a long time, but never got around to it. I enjoy a good cell phone game, but downloading these things is a little like Russian Roulette: you never know what you're going to get. So threads like this are helpful.

    Here's a rundown of what I've played:

Tetris: Not much to say about this. It's Tetris, it plays pretty well, perhaps the only game a lot of people will really need.

Frogger: Also decent, but gets boring after a while like a lot of classic games.

Defender of the Crown: Total shit. The game itself doesn't stand the test of time, and the conversion is terrible. I couldn't even figure out how to work the catapult.

Doom RPG: Excellent, but I haven't really put much time into it.

Xevious: Surprisingly good. You have to get used to using the cross pad as a controller (less than ideal on most phones), but it plays okay if you turn on the autofire option.

Joust: Mediocre. No pterodactyl and only one enemy type. Controls quite well, for what it's worth. There are only two samples in the entire game, which really takes away some of the classic feel.

Hudson's Adventure Island: This is a decent little adventure, but I got it hoping for what I remember as Wonder Boy from the arcade and got something very different. The Wonder Boy/Adventure Island dichotomy has always mystified me.

Y's Book I: Excellent little RPG, suited perfectly for the cell phone. Haven't played it in a while, though; I got stuck in one of the dungeons.

Does anyone know where/how I can download Military Madness? I have a Verizon phone, if that matters (LG VX 6000). If I had that I could probably just delete all my other games except Tetris.

Is this the one you have?

I don't have a cell phone but I think it looks great. It seems to be a remix of Wonder Boy in Monster Land(the second game in the WB series). I think it was made by Westone themselves too since they show it on their website. The original Wonder Boy is available for cell phones from Sega.

Hey Sleeveboy, could you fill me in on Ys? I got to the first dungeon, where you fight the magician boss with the flames going around the screen. I have no fucking clue what to do next, and I cannot find a FAQ.

    Other game reviews:
Lemonade Stand: Stay away at all costs.

    Bejewled: Barebones piece of shit.

DigDug: Decent, but somewhat hard on cell phone.

Pacman: Shitty on my phone, the map is compressed to fit on the screen all at once, rather than scrolling.

Mr Driller: Not too bad, but nothing great.

Go out and gain about 4-5 levels. It's a little tedious, but soon you'll be able to deal damage to him.

That looks like a more advanced version, but yeah, that looks like the one.

I think I'm at the last boss, and I have no idea what the hell to do. I was wondering if you had beaten the game yet? I'm supposed to find a blue steel sword or something to defeat the SOB, but this game gives you absolutely no direction. I would quit playing, but I've made it so far.

I'm going to throw another vote behind Doom RPG. It's the only game I've paid for on my new phone, and it's worthy.

  9. I have MAME running on my N-Gage. It's not perfect but it plays a decent game of Tempest.

I just downloaded this, and I can see what you guys mean.
It's so easy to tell that the guys that made this are 80s and 90s DOS game freaks. The e-mail from B.J. Blackowitz and the dobermans from Wolfenstein reworked into "hellhounds" made me smile.

I also can't believe I remembered the year in which Doom was released on the first try.
