Thread: When the Finchie comes around

  1. Well, if you're pursing it as a more professional thing, I think we need to see more, nicely scanned or something, to judge.
There's only two problems with that, and hopefully they'll both be fixed by next month.

No, there's nothing wrong with colored pencil, and I like its intimacy, but here I don't see you doing anything super-special with the medium. The sunrays in the second picture aren't good, but I know it's because it's hard to do broad things with colored pencil. Maybe you'll want to try mixed medium. with watercolor? (MInd you, I say this because I have a hard on for anything watercolored.)
It's something i'm more than willing to try. What brand do you suggest? I used Koi for a while, but they get nasty dull after you put them down. Maybe i'm just not experienced with them.

The enviroments aren't that great, but the people look very nice. I like them. I think you'd want to go more in the style of the second drawing, which is more anime-inspired, as opposed to the first one which is rather plainly anime, or anime knock-offish. I really like the bridge. Very strong, but not smothered with color or detail.
Anime knock-offish is definitely not what i want. Is it that bad? The inspiration is obvious, but the day people associate me with Amerimanga or Amerime, that's the day i shoot myself in the face. I know i'm a jerk for saying it, but i really hate the "DRAW MANGA NOW!" stuff.
That background is bothering me more and more.

Words I never expected to see.
Ha, yeah, it's not a lot, but $8 an hour at one job, compared to roughly $21 at the teaching makes it seem like a lot. The problem is, it goes from kind of exciting and inspiring to boring and soul-draining. It varies from class to class. The good classes are pretty good, but the bad ones are reeeally bad.

I feel the exact opposite for the same reason, heh. I think because the second one looks more anime-inspired that it comes off more "Draw Manga Now!" than the first one, which looks more polished and like you've got the style down.

  3. Dun-nun! Another Patri pic. This one's just for fun, but critiquicism is encouraged and appreciated.

  4. Do you just not care about the background at all?

  5. That's harsh. Explain what you mean.

  6. I like your drawings a lot Finch. I do not go to an art school, but know people that do, and I have seen a LOT of crappy anime/anime-style drawings by students there. A lot.

However, from these three pictures it looks like you can pull off such a style really well. The drawings are good and cute, and the frogs are sw33t. I concur about the backgrounds though, in the first two pics the fact that they are a) sloppily colored and b)colored with colored pencils makes the drawings look a little amateurish, and they don't deserve that. It looks like you can color really well, so you should not be lazy.

But yeah, you are an art professor and I am...nothing. So, you know, grain of salt and stuff.

  7. I really appreciate it, Salsashark. I don't care who it's from or what experience they have, i just want input beyond "i like it" or "that sucks, you stupid bitch". I'm not sure if Thief's refering to the new pic, in which the background is meant to be simple, or just all of them.

I've seen way too many independent (whatever that means) artists go for pre-drawn, photographed, or complete absence of backgrounds. It makes me really self-conscious. I love it when an artist draws his or her own backgrounds in his or her own style. It makes good work into great work. Like i said, it's something i'm really pushing myself to do. Sqoon's suggestion for watercolor bg's is awesome and it never even crossed my mind.

Like almost any art, drawing, design professor i've met, my own work needs a lot of improvement. I judge others work as i see it, and my own doesn't get judged as much as i need it to. I just feel like i'm a step below something good. Maybe it's a lot of steps, but i like the way i draw for the first time in the 20 years i've been doing it, but i recognise i still need a lot of improvement before i'm at a professional level.

I don't think any of these pictures look like that at all. And yeah, that's definitely a good thing.

The background on the third pic just looks really arbitrary to me. I say that because it looks like something I'd do, and I know if/when I do that to drawings it is just completely arbitrary and to fill up the background with something. You'd probably be better off with no background at all if it's going to be that way. And it looks kind of sloppy. I know there is a fine line between kind of a "sloppy-looking style" and actually sloppy, but but it seems to me like until you are totally a drawing master you should usually just go for looking polished and not-sloppy so you can improve.

  9. b)colored with colored pencils
Not really the colored pencils, just the technique. Really clean looking colored pencil work takes a lot of time, it would be really good to move to watercolor or something like sqoon said just because of that.

I don't have a problem with the last drawing's BG. It's just a character illustration, with the name printed even, so I wouldn't expect a normal background and the blue+2 dots fills up space. Although because of that, I wouldn't have made the frog active. The flower and frog should just be posing with Patri. I also don't get the red outlines around things?

  10. Salsa- I just wanted something designy to pull it together for that bg. I'm going to redo the third pic tonight or tomorrow, maybe with my worst enemy... THE RULER. D: D: D:

I really like the way Hajime Ueda (Qko-chan and FLCL mangas) and Tagro (Sargasso and a lot of porn) draw; rough, simple, kind of undergroundish, and cute. That's the type of thing i'm going for. I don't want to copy them, just pull in whatever they do for my own style.

    Ueda- http://www.gainaxpages.com/manga/flclmanga.php

    A Tagro drawing- http://www11.plala.or.jp/TAGRO/LD3V-Wall.jpg

It's just the backgrounds, though, right? Or am i completely off with the pencils? I like the glow.

I didn't want her just standing there, so i put a little action in the drawing. I'm trying different colors for outlines, avoiding black if i can. In the second Patri pic, i was trying to counter the cools with the warm colors, and vice versa. I thought it worked well... Maybe not.
