That was a TERRIBLE boat in HL2. If there had been a boat in HL1, it would have felt EXACTLY THE SAME.
At the time it came out, I felt much the same way about it as I did about WW, and then WW came along and put things in perspective for me. I do appreciate OoT more now, especially how much better it controller compared to a lot of other 3D games at the time, but the overworld is still a little dull and stretched out compared to the densely paced 2D Zeldas.
I liked Water Hazard, but I'm well aware that it is the most polarizing part of Half Life 2.
Which begs the question of why they would make half of Episode 2 the same thing with a car.
I don't think Zelda II is "densely paced" at all. That overworld sucks a million times more than OoT's.
ALttP and Link's Awakening are different stories though.
And the first Zelda really hasn't been reproduced since. All the other games give you way more clues as to where you are supposed to go. All in all, everyone probably spent more time (proportionate to game length, I guess) in the overworld of the original than in any game in the series since, and that overworld wasn't particularly compelling either.
The thing about the older ones is there was a lot more combat in the overworld, but I think that many encounters would have ruined OoT and all the rest. Majora's Mask handled it really well.

That's just the problem. It's COMPLETELY passable terrain for a long, long time, until it isn't. And then the helicopter rapes you. Having a line of text saying "turn around and get your boat, fool!" or respawning one would have taken me out of the game much less than the nice, long closeup of the engine's flaws that little trip gave me.
If I couldn't have moved any further without the boat, the game should have found a better way of explaining that.

Why on earth were you not in the boat in the first place? It seemed pretty obvious that you're intended to take the boat the entire way as soon as you come across the first ridiculously huge radiation-covered field, 30 seconds after getting the thing.

The original game was a 7/10 game that TNL has decided is 10/10. I look for this game to be around 8/10 if they make the necessary improvements.
WW sucks dick.
