I saw a retard boyfriend and girlfriend at the mall today. Real window-licking types. Kinda makes me wonder what retard sex is like. Must be an awful mess.

I would think its rather easy for an actor of even moderate skill to play a retard - they are dull to external stimuli and emotion and their lines are simpler. A person can't become like, "a former retard" so they don't have to make these huge emotional changes throughout. Like Dustin Hoffman acted exactly the same no matter what was going on with Tom Cruise.

Are there any acting types around here that can confirm or deny?

For Rosie's or Dustin Hoffman's characters I'd agree with you...they just acted like blithering idiots. It's really apparent they were someone normal pretending to be retarded.

Leo Dicaprio in Gilbert Grape was pretty effective, however. He had all sorts of weird and random physical and emotional mannerisms and quirks going on. It was pretty easy to forget who he was and buy into the character.
