How come I can say she's Mexican, or she's a Mexican, and they both sound fine. I can say she's Chinese, but she's a Chinese sounds weird. I can't use "a" and a China word. A Chinese. A Chinawoman.

I blame the -ese. Anything -ian/-ean seems to work. Asian, Canadian, European, Atlantean, Kryptonian, etc.
