Thread: Upgrading the Video Card

  1. Upgrading the Video Card

So Elder Scrolls Oblivion came out and runs fairly mediocore on my system. I just upped the RAM from 1GB to 2GB today (but havn't tested the game yet) and was planning on putting the $300 down for the GeForce7800 GTS OC (Or GT or GS, don't remember, think it was GTS though). My system specs as of now are:

    -Audigy X-Fi (Music) sound card
    -Pentium 4 3.0GHZ
    -ATI X800XL VC
    -2GB of PC3200 RAM

So my question to my fellow TNLers is simple, what video card do you think I should buy? I was planning on the 7800GTS like I said but Best Buy only had the AGP version in. Also I briefly thought about the x1600Pro but from what I understand, it has some more support for newer features but is not much of an upgrade over the x800 line of cards. Is the 7800 worth it for the upgrade over the ATI card? Is the x1800 or x1900 ATI line of cards a worthy upgrade as well? I'm not exactly looking to spend the ridiculous money on the best of the best but I want to go somewhere in the $300 range. One of my concerns was ghosts from the ATI drivers when switching to an Nvidia card, is this a valid concern or not that big of a deal?

I'll go as high as $400 if I get enough positive feed-back on faster cards and if I believe the upgrade is truly worth it. Also, where would the reccomended buying place/brand be? Pricewatch.com has decent prices but should I look elsewhere?

  2. I'm somewhat new to the computer hardware world, but I'd say check out newegg first. Also if you are looking to spend around $300-$400, check out the GeForce 7900 GT. They run around that price range on newegg and are also cheaper and better than the 7800 GTX series.

Go ahead and check these out. I'll post 7900 GT, 7800 GTX, and 7800 GT when available to compare.

  3. if you have the cash theres not reason NOT to get a 7900 based card.

  4. Get a 7900GT, it's pointless getting a 7800GT, and the 7800GTX costs too much.
Out of the 7900GTs, these two were the best, though they cost $20 more than ElCapitan's ones did.

These two here are almost 40% faster in terms of clock speed than a standard 7800GT.

Don't cheap out on your video card, make sure you get one with nice speed, and pay that bit extra for it.

  5. I got Evga 7900 GT that Burky posted and its running rather well. Before, I had 7800gt which went into my wife's new pc

And as always Newegg is the best place to get stuff.
