I think being an American mean believing in the country, what it is trying to be, and coming (or living) here not only with the goal of making yourself better, but also the country. I'd also say it means believing in the right of everybody else to be free, and being ready to fight for those rights for others as well as ourselves. (But not neccessarily jumping into war to force that freedom upon people.) Being an American also means that you have the chance to be whatever you want to be, without being held back by lack of opportunity, government, or other factors.

Okay, if you believe all this then what is your beef with these illegals? Are they not trying to better themselves be coming to America and bettering our country by working and raising families, etc.? And being free to be whatever you want to be without being held back by the government? Held back like as in, deported? Or because you're not fluent in the language? I mean, this is nice flag-waving hyperbole but it's not really making your point.

What I see as becoming an American is coming here and, while keeping your culture, language, and whatever else, doing what you can to help improve this country, and to join in with its citizens, not be separated from them. It's like, you get a new job: do you go to work with the idea of doing your best to help your company be a strong, productive company, while also bringing home a paycheck, or do you go there just to make money and not give a damn how the company does? Change the company to the country, and that's what I see as being an American.

A good company cheerleader doesn't criticize the decisions of the board of directors, yet I've seen you in other threads (the Rumsfield one for instance) decrying the bosses. See, this is where your analogy falls apart. The founders set up America so that the government works at the will of the PEOPLE, not the other way around. That's what the Constitution is, it's the contract between the people and their government.

So to say that these illegals aren't Americans because they don't want to instantly plug into American Corporate-style thought is ridiculous. Surely, a lot of them aren't looking to become legal and are merely migrant workers. However, for those that WANT to stay I don't see why we should ask them to abandon their culture for ours when there's no real precedent for it. If they want to sing the Star-Bangled Banner in Spanish, go for it. If America really cared so much about it being sung in English, then maybe more people would actually know the words to it.

There are a lot of people in Little Italy, Chinatown, or whatever else, that keep their culture and identity, while also being proud to be a part of this country and the contributions they are trying to make to it.

Alot of these illegals are proud. This isn't a march like in Pakistan or the Gaza Strip where they're holding up signs with "Death to Freedom" and shit, these people WANT to be a part of America and people like YOU want to shut the door.

It's also really pathetic how you keep trying to twist this into something racist when it isn't.
