Hasn't HDDVD had more features for awhile? Like the internet connectivity stuff and weird PIP features? Stuff that blu ray hasn't got working yet. Can you upgrade BR players to the newer profile revisions?
if they had gone the other way? Well then it would have been a stalemate or if fox really was lookng to jump ship (doubtful) HD-DVD would have the larger studio supprt, everyone would say stick a fork in blu-ray and we would have had a single format for our movies.
of course the PS3 was the driving force of blu-ray, thats what they INTENDED it to be by putting the damn thing in there. Sony called it their Trojan horse and it worked. As for lower prices, just because hd-dvd is gone doesnt mean they arent going to continue declining, now every hardware company can jump in and drive down the prices of these bad boys, instead of half on one side and half on the other, without worry that their R&D and marketing of their players is in vein because of two formats.I know the Toshiba price-cutting was desperate, but I really think that the PS3 is what's driving BluRay - at least in the US. Also those price cuts were the deciding factor for people taking the plunge, I'll risk "wasting" $200 but not 3 or 400. It would have benefited YOU the BR fan by getting Sony to lower costs earlier. That incentive is gone. The costs WILL go down obviously, but it'll take a bit longer now.

One thing I don't get... Why not aim to make physical media smaller? DVDs take up too much space. In my 'perfect world', discs would be about the size of a coin.

Probably fabrication costs. You've already got this "standard cd-size" going, I imagine much of the manufacturing is being done in the same places that make CDs.
Just make the packaging smaller. HD formats got that right, at least. More data + even smaller disc = sup catastrophic damage from even the smallest scratches. I don't like the CD single/GameCube-sized discs, so I don't think I'd care for something even less substantial.
You could put a movie on a micro-sd card nowadays, but good luck keeping up with the damn things.
Nevermind the manufacturing costs, naturally.

Maybe the shipping savings could outweigh the cost of changing manufacturing? I have no clue honestly...
GC-discs were a step in the right direction. CD/DVD-size feels outdated to me, like vinyl records. But it won't change, until the consumers want something smaller.

I'm willing to bet vinyl will outlast the CD at this rate, honestly.
yeah it did.
Blu-ray profile 1.1 requires a second video decoder for PIP, so that would mean that firmware upgrades cannot update the profile 1.0 players.
as for 1.1 to 2.0, depends on the player, if its got an ethernet port id say your safe. If its a PS3, thats all the way good on the 2.0 standard.
Phillips today just unveiled their new blu-ray player, profile 1.1, for $350. Panasonic also unveiled 2.0 ready player.
EDIT:
ALSO, during the Panasonic conference, they announced that apparently Target stores are now blu-ray exclusive.
Also, sony just unveiled their Sub-$200 internal blu-ray drive for PCs.

I didnt really care what format won. As long as one actually won. Having 2 different formats divided up between the studios was just fucking stupid and screwing over consumers. 2 formats wouldnt have been too terrible if the stupid studios would've released for both.
Yay blu ray I guess.
