It's easy as hell to rip DVDs and play them on the PSP already.

Shouldn't it fall under "fair-use" rules if you bought the DVD? It's not illegal to rip MP3's from a CD (yet). Though I did buy a CD once that had a statement on it to the effect that by opening it I agreed to certain terms that included it only be played in "authorized players". I.E. - You can't rip it because we want you to pay for it again in some shitty DRM-ridden digital form.
Also, I wouldn't expect in anyway to be getting content off of those discs and onto a PSP without an added cost. Either at purchase or though some sort of "pay-to-unlock" setup. Why would Sony potentially hurt sales of UMD movies without making the revenue up elsewhere?
The downloadable PS1 games play on both the PS3 and PSP with no additional cost. You can play PS1 discs on the PSP with no additional cost.
I'm talking about movies.
Old PS1 games aren't currently competing at retail.

Neither are UMDs. No one is going to buy the same movie on UMD and Blu-Ray.
