The problem is that, ever since Watergate, the US is afraid to have any sort of vice or corruption in a president. Look at what Watergate did to Nixon's legacy, never mind the fact the he got us out of Vietnam and opened up relations with China. Look at where a blowjob got Clinton, who while not great, was easily the best president we've had since. No, America has to vote based on morals, rather than ability- everyone has to be squeaky fucking clean. Unfortunately, competent politicians are rarely squeaky clean. Jimmy Carter could be said to be the most moral, honorable man to ever hold the office and he proved to be a political limpdick of the highest order.

You're right on Clinton and Carter, but Nixon's legacy is tainted because he was a clinically paranoid bigot. If any President's legacy was unfairly tainted by Vietnam it was LBJ (you know, the guy who made it so black people were able to vote fairly, ended school segregation, and passed more social welfare bills in his first 100 days than any President since FDR). Anyway, the problem with today is that after Nixon the more moderate, realpolitick section of the Republican party was ousted by morons like Reagan and George H.W. Bush and their brand of 'moral majority' crap has tainted American politics since.

EDIT: Also, American politics has gone backwards in terms of who can run and how many times. There was a time when losing a Presidental election was almost a prerequisite for someone who wanted to eventually get the job. Now, you lose one race and the public acts like you've been 'marked' for life.

Vasteel's theory blows up when you consider that Clinton, who we all knew liked vagina before his first election, won. Twice. And most people still love the guy. Nixon was a scoundrel and a racist, and was also trying a lot of the same power grabs Bush is doing now (with EXACTLY the same people behind the scenes). He deserved to get thrown out of office.

Could anyone honestly say that, to the vast majority of the country, Bush was more "squeaky-clean" than Gore? Do you even remember what Gore was like? Come on.

I think a small percentage of people, mostly stupid Southerners, vote on morals. The others vote by wading through a shitstorm of vitriol and doublespeak. And oh, whoever the ~5% of Iowans that take part in the caucus choose.

The problem is that small percentage gets magnified when you have a system that takes 98% of the country out of the picture before Election Day.

Yes, it was stupid Southern Republicans who put Bush into office (that was part of Rove's strategy). Actually the rise of the South the past three decades coincides nicely with the rise of conservatism (the fake authoritarian conservatism, that is). I am starting to believe the rise of the latter at least is dead for the next few decades thanks to Bush.
