Dinosaur Eggs.

That's the whole thing, he's a great, A-list, immediately recognizable actor... playing the butler. It's a part for a less noticable character actor.
That and he didn't really seem to even try to play Alfred, he just played himself. Alfred's supposed to be sort of cynical and almost oblivious to the whole Batman thing; Caine was giving grandstanding motivational speeches and acting the part almost like a brother-in-arms.
That sort of thing really bugged me about Begins, you've got A-list veteran actors playing roles like the butler and the tech guy, filling screentime with their unneeded warm fatherly bullcrap filler, while really important roles from Year One like Flass and Falcone were filled by nobodies and treated like afterthoughts.

Was Flass even in Begins? I didn't notice. He's absolutely a major part of Year One, too.
Falcone was so lame. That entire half-hour went nowhere.

Yeah, Flass was in begins. He was the cop that Bats hoisted up by his ankle.
I'm not a devious man by nature... but when you're unarmed, your tactics might gonna be downright Archimedean.
Oh right.
I like the Gordon/Flass baseball bat fight a lot better.
I just did a quick run through of Year One. Not a single panel with Alfred in it.
So i view his Alfred as someone who is there for Bruce when he needed the support. Its early in the life of Batman so the cynicism we are use to hasn't come to the surface yet.The Alfred we all know is the one that has been through it for years. So nothing is new.
Yeah, and Alfred shouldn't have been in the movie.
Caine's Alfred is pwn'd by the one in '89 Batman. INCLUDING THE DIET COKE COMMERCIAL ON THE VHS!
Flash Gordon is so awesome.
FLASH! AHHH AHHHHHH!
