I would like to give building a tube mic pre a shot. Anyone have any experience with this? I'm sure it's very similar to building guitar amps, but simpler. I am handy with a soldering iron. The only real requirements I need are 48V phantom power and gain control. Get me started TNL!
stuff like this myk?

Yes, precisely like that! In particular, I would like to build something that is the equivalent of the API 512c or the Neve 1073, but anything that will produce a relatively high quality pre will do.

Boo, Hiss.
The way I see it, it's great if you can shred, and it's great if you can write a song. So if you can do both you're a living fucking legend. That's why Tom Morello is the best guitar player ever, with EVH a close second. Sure, Van Halen's music is corny as fuck, but it's still better than most mainstream stuff, particularly all the godawful 80's hair bands that copied themI've never been terribly excited about his actual playing but I'm gathering new respect for EVH all the time.
My new philosophy on cables is to only buy Road Hogs brand ones. They're $15 as opposed to $10 for regular but they have a lifetime guarantee. So as long as you don't lose them you're saving money, and never have to worry about them crapping outI've either lost or had my box of guitar chords boosted. So I went in today and got me a new one.
Of course, I lost one already, lulz, but the peace of mind is worth the extra dough
My SG Junior came. The grey cap on one of the knobs already fell off and the machines are kind of poor (doesn't stay in tune half as well as my Rick or Fenders) but the P90 sound is terrific, if a little noisy even though we went in and shielded it with copper tape. I'm really lucky to have it.
Once I scrape a significant amount of spending money together my next purchases are cheap $40 knockoff Filtertron pickups for my Mustangs and a hipshot b-bender with g to a lever for my Telecaster. People say the regular b-benders work better but those are like $500 and I'll probably wind up never using it anyway
Oh, and I also got a Casio CZ-101 synth. I bought it mostly for a midi controller and corny synth sounds and it does corny synth sounds nicely, I have not messed with midi yet. I prefer my buddy's Alesis Micron to it (Micron has more sounds, more editing capabilities, and despite also being mini a fullsize keyboard) but this one was only $150 w/case and Microns are $400 and I don't have much spending money for a few months after the SG (unless I quit drinking, but where's the fun in that?). In short, worth it for the price, but if you have a real job maybe go for a Micron
It might be because mine's sort of broken but it's also really fucking noisy.

I bet that tweed cab is fun to haul around.
btw, if anyone ever sees an Acoustic Black Widow guitar, I'd like to hear about it. I'd really like to own one. Suppose to be a nice guitar that fly's under the radar these days.
