They can be thrown into a backpack and never ever ever crash on you when playing out.
Most pedals that are digital, are they doing things that couldn't be done routing into a computer?

Guitar. Laptop. Never the twain shall meet.
Well "can't" is a big word. Of course every digital pedal ever invented can be emulated. But when? How well? If Mr Black comes out with the world's greatest flanger and you want the world's greatest flanger you could just buy the thing. Or you could wait for some guy to tell you that he's emulated the thing (but would you really know if you didn't have access the real one in the first place?) or learn how to reverse engineer the hardware and crack the code and then emulate it yourself. Neither of the last two options seem rad at all. By that I mean even less rad than laptops on stage in the first place.
Gotcha, I guess you would be the guy to ask for this sorta thing. Yeah, so a digital is doing things similar to a computer on a topic, and the sanctity of the circuits overheating isn't really having a large effect on the sound generally speaking?
To be honest, I'm not really a pedal guy when it comes to guitar, but I was really curious about the nitty gritty.

Circuits don't overheat unless they are wrong. An overheating circuit is not going to be reliable enough to ever become a product. But yes, the switches and knobs do their usual jobs but they interface with a digital processor which does most, if not all of the work.
Thanks!

Trent Reznor plugged a guitar into a computer in the mid 90's. I'm not sure if anyone has done anything worth doing since then.
