This is 100% correct. I am damn good at what I do, but had I not gotten an "in" then I would not be working where I am today. We, for the most part, only hire upon recommendations from existing employees or other industry folk. Also, budgets for productions are shrinking bigtime, and the digital age has made alot of the tech that we work with much more readily available than ever before. The only other way is to do unpaid interships and work your way up, but even those can be hard to come by, and I also understand that some people can't do unpaid internships because they *gasp* have bills to pay.
