I want to learn how to do flash animations and whatnot. anyone have and good site or books to point me in the right direction?

Lynda.com has some good video instruction. You can watch some sample lessons and see if it works for you.

They have large number of tutorials, video and written, that pretty much cover every topic related to Flash you can think of. You can also check out Actionscript.org, but those are mostly Actionscript based tutorials.
