Thread: Building a computer

  1. Building a computer

I just want some opinions from anyone here who has used any of these parts. I decided to try and sell my Dell Dimension 3000 desktop on eBay and put together my own computer. I want to know if you had any compatibility issues or whatever. Here goes:

Mobo: Intel BOXDG965RYCK Socket T (LGA 775) Intel G965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz 2M sharing L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor
RAM: OCZ Dual Channel XTC 2048MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz Gamer Memor

For hard drives I'm going to get a small SATA (probably between 50-70 GBs) and a large SATA drive (probably between 200-300 GBs) both by Seagate since they've never failed me.

No video card, either, since I'm going to to wait out for DX10 cards. I will be taking the Sound Card out of my Dell to use on this one.

So help TNL. What are your thoughts?

  2. I think there's better motherboards to get than an Intel brand one.
Here are 3 Asus ones, but they don't have many reviews. Generally Asus are the best brand.
Google them maybe and see if they are any good.

    The rest seems fine.
There might be cheaper ram which is ok, like Gskill, Mushkin, Geil, Corsair if you look at those brands too.
[EDIT]I had a look and the ram you chose seems best.

For hard disks, why don't you just get one 300gb and partition it. You could save a bit that way.

  3. I'd rather have two: one for programs and one for storage. It's how I like to roll.

  4. the newest seagates (cant remember if theyre the 7200.9 or 7200.10) have perpendicular technology and supposedly rival the raptors for speed. look into one of those for your main drive.

  5. It seems to be the 7200.10 upon googling.

  6. Outpost/Fry's has had some killer Seagate deals lately. I got a 500GB for $150 after rebate and then the next week they had a 400GB for like $90. You should look there to see what's up now.

  7. newegg has pretty low prices on the seagates as well. i think the 300 gig 7200.10 was under $100.

This mobo is actually not bad. It has enough PATA ports to support both optical drives and HDDs so I won't have to get any additional memory. But I'm buying a normal ATX case. Will a micro ATX board fit in there?

  9. Again, will a micro-ATX board fit into a normal ATX tower? I need to know this before I commit into buying the mobo.

  10. Yes it will.
All it means is you could get a smaller case instead, but a regular tower is fine too.
