What if I love RPGs but hated every FF since 5?

    And FFXII is Nov 1.

As a complete package FFXII is the best JRPG I've ever played. I'm not done yet but I only have two real complaints and I think one of them will be rectified shortly. The other issue is that even though they do a great job of what they present it'd be better if the story wasn't so... safe. At least so far.

IAWTP. And this is coming from someone who's got FFXII LE preordered.

Putting FFXII in a game of the month poll is like putting a Squaresoft character in one of those GameFAQs polls. We know it'll win by default anyway; it's a moot point.

It's like KOTOR with customizable AI and no dialogue choices. I really wouldn't say your dislike or enjoyment of previous games in the series has very much bearing here.

Exactly as long as I thought that would take. Not one of the posters I was expecting it from, though.

  5. As for my choice, the only October release I've played so far is Contact, which isn't in the poll, so I'll have to wait on my vote. I think Sam & Max, Bully, Godhand, and Dark Messiah all have my interest, though. Good month.

Strong words. I'm looking forward to it, hopefully I'll be saying the same.
Buy Yakuza and Oblivion. Help yourself, help TNL.

Well it had to be said.

JRPG's are like traditional survival horror games. They're great at telling stories and introducing awesome characters (actually that's mostly survival horror lol), but as far as actual gameplay goes almost every other genre has them beat. Picking things from menus for an entire game is lame.

  7. You have to beat out VP2 for best JRPG, that says a lot?

There are specific aspects from other RPGs which I think are done better, but none as a whole. For instance, Xenogears has a better plot but the presentation falls apart late in the game.

Although Basch does dress like a Mad Max clown which makes it hard to take him seriously at times.

RPGs in general tend to have this sort of problem. Diablo and Morrowind's combat is just as bland as the average turn based crap. They're just adventure games with D&D overtones.

Dark messiah might be the first RPG where the combat is really gratifying in and of itself.

  10. I'm surprised and pleased that so many people other than myself voted God Hand.
