I read that review about 3 minutes after it went live, and I really have to say I agree with their decision to pull it. If I were in charge I would have pulled it too (but it never would have passed muster in the first place). It wasn't even a review of the game, just a rant about how much the dude hates D&D.

Oh. I didn't read it so I just assumed this was the case. Heh.

I just installed the beta patch 1.03 and it makes a massive difference performance-wise. Before I was struggling on 800x600 with low tex res, now I'm a constant 60fps at 1024x768 with medium tex res.
I'd highly recommend having a go if performance issues are ruining the game for you - it's a hell of a lot more fun when it works.

Of course, it's a beta patch, so it's recommended that you back up your My Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2\ folder, just in case.
So yeah, this is how the game should have shipped, imo.
