Could the second game be Wardner? If not, then I don't know.
Let's see I'm thinking of two Arcade Games I used to play alot but the names of them I can't recall. I'll describe em the best I can and maybe it will ring a bell.
The first game was a platformer where you played a alien or something you run and jump and shoot but the catch was you could hit a reverse button and fire behind you, I think I remember some boulders that you run away from.
The second was another rescue the Princess platformer with a really Super Deformed character you could use magic and your weapon. It was out during the Mortal Kombat craze or earlier. It's not Ghouls and Ghosts.
I know if I see a picture I'll recognize it, but my descriptions are probally too vauge.

Wardner is older than I thought, did it ever see a console release? it had some nice rpg elements.

Wardner came out on Genesis.
I have Wardner on Genesis and it's a pretty faithful port. The difficulty's there as well.

I remember seeing Wardner in my aunt's store once, but I always though it was Willow for some reason.
I'm still wondering wish is the first game. Could you be a bit more specific?
If it weren't for the reverse button mentioned, Act-Fancer would fit the description of the first game.
