Except that Compass is right. I live in Chicago and am always in large groups of people when I go to a movie or event, and the phenomenon he's talking about is endlessly annoying. It's one thing to show a spontaneous, genuine appreciation for a performance and quite another to drown out the show because you like to hear yourself whoop. Mention alcohol in a stand-up act and you get a wall of idiots screaming, "Wooooooooooooooooooooooo!" way too loud and way too long. People (particularly Caucasian men) laugh loudly and knowingly at every stupid thing in a movie to show they get it and are cool.
It's almost like a group mental illness and I think it's indicative of self-absorption and a reduced capacity to enjoy entertainment.
