Thread: PS3 & apple cinema display

  1. PS3 & apple cinema display

I have the 23 inch apple cinema display(not the new style, the one right before It ) I was wondering If It's possible to hook the ps3 up to the display. I know there's no DVI cable out yet, so are there any adapters or switch boxes I can use?

  2. Isn't there an all-purpose DVI/HDMI adaptor?

  3. that won't work unless the apple display is hdcp compliant afaik

I'd say your best bet (assuming the display lacks hdcp) is to find an adapter that'll let you use component cables and outputs to vga, but if it does have hdcp any old hdmi->dvi converter should work fine

  4. Why does HDCP matter? Does anything even use it yet?

  5. bluray and hddvd players do

  6. Okay from what I found out the PS3 won't display on anything thats not HDCP compliant lcd's, tv's, plasma, ect...I have a first generation Sony HDTV which only supports 1080i and buying another Is not an option for me right now. so my 23" cinema display Is my only option right now. For those interested In the apple lcd, PS3 setup I found this. It's a tad pricey but way cheaper than buying a 46+ inch lcd/plasma If you own an apple lcd.

HD DVD doesnt use it yet, or at least I haven't run into it.

My samsung lcd monitor has it whenever it does happen, but my Magnavox TV doesn't.

ugh, I wouldn't buy that just yet

order yourself the dvi-hdmi adapter cable from monoprice.com (shouldn't be over 20 bucks) and see if it'll work on the apple display first, assuming it doesn't use that awful proprietary dvi connection from old apple computers. If it works, you saved yourself a good $300 or so, and if it doesn't you're only out 20 bucks. Honestly, I think the only thing that requires hdcp out of the ps3 is bluray movie playback (games should be fine), but if you want I can look into it for you for a definitive answer...

    edit: one of these cables

  9. Nope. I looked Into that. The HDMI to DVI adapter doesn't work. Some guys from Macrumors forums already tested It out.

I already have the money for the HD-mate, but I'm going to hold off to see what the next PS3 update brings. Also If anybody has a cheaper alternative, It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

one of those and a set of component cables will run you a third of what that mac-specific switcher costs, if that apple display has a normal vga input it's all gravy
