Thread: The Weekly Comics Grind

  1. Im into the more lew key self containing stuff myself but there isnt much I like out there now. Vertigo pretty much sucks at the moment (for the mini series type stuff) but I know something good will come out sooner or later. Im a huge fan of Unknown Soldier though which is wrapping up next week I think. Brian K Vaughn (sp?) wrote an amazing mini called "The Escapists" a few years back. I think you would like that Yeller if you havent read it. Im assuming Fell is way cancelled? Orc stain and stuff is too wacky for me but I pick up Godland every now and then (thats probably cancelled too, heh).

For Morrison's Batman, well if youre not into reading the entire run then yeah youre not going to like it. Its written like one huge book. Miss 1 issue and you miss an entire chapter. You can go back and look at the very first issue of that run and find stuff relevant to more recent issues (Protip: Look at the stuff spray painted on the walls in that entire 1st Morrison batman issue). There is just insane stuff going on in that book and im surprised DC is letting him run this wild. I love it. Frazier Irving is just killing it on the art too. Amazing stuff.

  2. I was not allowed to buy Creepy as a kid. Nor Eeerie, Vampirella or Savage Sword of Conan. So when my mom would go to the grocery store I would stand at the magazine rack and check out all the stuff I wasn't allowed to have. Well the local comic shop seems to have a big box of Creepy, Eerie, Doc Savage, etc. So of course I've been going off. The last batch I brought home had the gem pictured above. I was going to get a couple Creepy's no matter what and I got a massive boner when I saw the Richard Corben cover. I didn't even notice the banner at the top. He drew every story in the thing!!!

Anyhow, to me Corben is the only guy that even comes close to possibly potentially rivaling Frazetta. I don't know how in the hell he paints and draws the way he does but his shit is as unique as it is rad. And flipping through this issue I noticed an ad for a Robert E Howard sci-fi book fully comic'd out by Richard Corben. I'm on the hunt!

  3. Heh, Richard Corben. He drew the most epic juggs on the planet. I can't stress enough how much I appreciated this in my teenage years. I never bought a single book he drew but would always read them on the racks.

Also, red X for the picture on this end. Yes, I'm stuck using IE at the moment.

  4. His poster for the Aqua Teen movie was amazing! Dude did some crazy shit for Heavy Metal, too.

Ha! I have a cover of his sitting right next to me, turns out!

  5. I'm not so much into his newer stuff. He peaked before he got ahold of a computer. His earliest computer embellished works are pretty cool though.

I might have to start a Corben thread. He really is a close second to Frazetta imo

  7. Tim Chamberlin, comic shop dude from back in Boston, is making some pretty great comics about the customers using actual quotes:

(His art is all over New England Comics stores in the area! Great stuff!)

  8. Another fine post!

A comic based on Watchmen would be SO GAY

  9. Finally all caught up on King City. Man, that is a book that just keeps on giving. That dude's hardcore pun base humor is right up my alley, and he just CRAMS the pages with little gems to find later. This is seriously great stuff. Also of note is a confederate of B. Graham, James Stokoe. His book Orc Stain is pretty fucking great. The world he has created is just amazing, and has been about as inventive as anything I've read in recent memory. Funny shit too. Their currency system is hilarious. Both of these books are highly recommended. The first Orc Stain trade back just came out a week or two ago.
