Thread: Official Apple Thread

  1. Official Apple Thread

I didn't want to bump the several old threads, and figured it's time for an official thread. Macs, iPods, iTV's and iPhones (maybe?). I'll start it off with some of the apps I use. Also MWSF is Tuesday.

Just some obvious ones first. iTunes, Office 2004 (especially the note view in Word), Mail.app, Keynote, Garageband (for podcasting), Safari, Skype and iPhoto.

There is only one useful apple.

  3. Is it 1997?

No, but you can't tell from the marketshare numbers.

Honeycrisp apples are the only ones worth eating. All others are for baking and throwing at the poor.

Anyway, Schlep mentioned a pretty solid range of software, most of which are my personal choices in their categories as well.

I'm not so sure about XChat, though. My problem is that there really isn't a good IRC client for OS X. Ircle is just as infrequently updated as it ever was, lacking things like mIRC color, stability and a good interface... like always. I don't really like Colloquy, but it's the most functional one I've used yet, so I stick with it. I've been a Mac user for something like 7 or 8 years now and the only piece of Windows software I really have ever missed is mIRC.

    Also:

    Saft
    http://haoli.dnsalias.com/Saft/

A Safari plugin that makes it the best browser I've ever used. Seriously. The ad blocking alone makes it worth the price of admission, which I forked over after a day. Excellent software. Saft also adds Growl support to Safari, which rules.

  6. On the topic of no good IRC software for Mac, it's pretty much true. I enjoy Snak a lot, even paid for it, but it's very lacking in certain important features. Can't set up proxy shit with it, so I have to use Xchat at school (for use with HTTPTunnel).

Cyberduck is also pretty fair for FTP purposes, I've been using it for a while with no complaints.

For those using iChat, the Chax is an essential add-on. It's free and updated frequently enough and gives you some of the features that plain iChat is lacking.

I was having issues with it. The schedule (that I saw) only did times, not specific days, and it kept duplicating all of my tasks. Lame. I just stick to making To Dos with alarm in iCal for important assignments.

  8. I haven't had a problem. You can have Task List make To Do's with due dates in iCal if you want, and the alarms are customizable.

Maybe where you're getting dupes in iCal is if you're selecting the same task and hitting the iCal button over and over. The iCal button doesn't export all your tasks to iCal, just the ones you have highlighted.

np. I found it one day by accident and have loved it ever since.

Does it allow you to add other search engines to the window in the top right? Having Wikipedia & Dictionary.com up there are the only things I really miss from Firefox.
