Well on Granderoho's suggestion, I went out and picked up an HD projector.

Don't hate, projectors are sweet. It can't totally replace a tv, but everything I really want to watch, I want to see on my projector. I'm jealous of people with the 1080p projectors now, mine is only 720p . The way I used to have mine set up it could deal with some ambient light. I had overhead lights on a dimmer and could put them about half way up before it started to wash out the image. As long as the light source isn't directed towards the screen it's fine, so i kept the lights on in the half of the room i was sitting in and not the screen side. I also have a highly reflective screen (Greywolf II). If you don't have proper light control and a real screen though, I can see why people would think they suck.

I don't really think anyone is hating on projectors, anyone with a small amount of knowledge about them would know they can be fucking awesome when used properly. But also anyone with a small amount of knowledge would know about the inherent negatives to using a projector (like you just mentioned), and that it's pretty insane to say that they could replace a TV.

I could only imagine a 1080p projector in a dark theater, it must be absolutely insane.
