He bit off more than he could chew? He wrote all these shits. It's his own fault for doing it this way.
Book four in particular goes off on some many weird tangents and throws in all these characters nobody cares about.
Oh come on, they really weren't that bad. GRRM just bit off more than he could chew in my opinion. I think he even said in the prologue of book 4, that he felt a bit stuck, and that he had to split them into two books because he was either going to have to tell the whole story for half of the characters, or half of the story for all of the characters. Dude definitely needs to reign it in, but those last two books are still worth your time.

Yeah, the books stumble hard right there, no doubt. I never found my way back after.

Well, I'm not saying he gets a free pass for it, he definitely fucked up and his work suffered. Big time. But being completely dismissive of the last two books because they weren't as good, just seems a bit unfair. I've read WAY WORSE books in long running series' (I'm looking at you Dark Tower) that don't seem to get the same amount of hate. Maybe he just needs a better editor who isn't afraid to tell him what sucks.
Thats exactly what I meant by biting off more than he could chew. Nobody gives a shit about new characters and storylines, when the POV characters that readers are invested in are absent.
I get that he lets the characters react ("gardening" as he calls it) in some cases, instead of sticking strictly to his plotted path. I think where he has a problem is dealing with the unexpected character actions. And I get that - my characters throw me some curveballs and I desire to explore what happens. But even a gardener has to make tough decisions about what to tend aggressively. In Dungeons & Dragons terms, you have to be flexible as DM but you have to still control things.
I don't like most of the characters who popped up in book four, but I wouldn't say nobody cares about them. Have you seen how hyped up people are for Euron Greyjoy now that his appearance in season 6 is nearly confirmed by the "pirate" casting call? How angry people were that Arianne was left out of the Dorne plot line? How upset people were that Jon Connington was nixed?
Shit - I know he's book five but if they don't do Wyman Manderly in some way it will be a serious detriment to the series. Especially if they keep Jon in stasis for all of season 6. Gotta have some hope for the Starks re: the TV audience.
Yeah I really don't give a shit about any of that stuff.
Maybe Euron. But he's just a notable asshole.
I think if they were to cast one of the current "frontrunners" for the Euron role (as defined by the fandom) I might care more. If they cast Dominic West I'm on team Euron for sure.
I hear another alum of The Wire auditioned for Randyll Tarly, too - Chris Bauer (Sobotka). That would be rad to have him as Sam's father.
Dominic West is kind of the worst though
He was a good hobbit
