That was pretty awesome.
Right now I just don't buy Ben's alternate timeline actions. He let her die in a timeline where she was his daughter. He would not let her face the mild disappointment of a state college in a timeline where she was nothing. I really hope this is a setup to show how Jacob negatively influenced people.
It was a great episode one way or another however.

This show drips with so much allegory and stupidity I might as well just read the bible.

Anyone else find funny that Ben and Richard blindly followed Jacob because they he told them he had a master plan - a purpose - and when the time was right he would share it with them but instead they were clueless resembles how some of the viewers feel now about the show? Blindly listening to the creators because they've been told the show will have a purpose.
I guess some of you can empathize with them.
Maybe half the reason I enjoy this show is because I don't read interviews and I don't watch the promos.
We know he came from the Black Rock, he was locked in chains for some reason, Jacob gave him a "gift" - which we can safely assume is immortality, and he followed Jacob's orders. I really want to know his backstory and everything (why he was in those chains, what Jacob told him, etc) but we're seeing flash sideways now, so I'm not sure how we'll get a full understanding of Richard's actually past.
Ben's story is okay. I wouldn't call it genius anymore than I would the story of Severus Snape or, hell, the Biblical Jacob if we wanna go super oldschool on the archetype. It definitely makes for good watching but I don't think the story itself deserves the kind of praise that, say, Desmond's does. The genius in that equation is Michael Emerson. That dude is amazing.
Even though the alt story let us look at Alex for a bit, I'm still calling Waste Of Time on that shit. At one point last night, when we cut to The School of Super Convenient Coincidences, I actually got up and did the dishes. Even when it's watchable, the on-island events are way more interesting and I almost feel like it's another commercial break in between the good stuff. I get that he's good at his core. Going with Illana established that. I didn't need to see him face off against the man with no dick from Ghostbusters to understand that. Insinuating that the principle had no dick might have made up for it, though. The rarely seen Super Bonus would have been given had “It's just what I heard!” been tacked on after.
Next week should be a big one and I seriously doubt we'll have a Richard flash-sideways since without all the wizard shit he'd be very dead in the alt timeline. Though to be honest I'd actually love to see them even more stupidly dedicated to the concept and just show his very old tombstone for half the episode. Along with cricket noises. Maybe a tumbleweed.
