Thread: I have a subscription to Famitsu Weekly!

  1. I have a subscription to Famitsu Weekly!

I went to the local Japanese bookstore and found NOTHING in the way of Japanese game magazines. I asked that what the dilly yo? They replied "Chizzle my Nizzle, you gots ta rush if you wanna be havin' that dope shit". Actually they told me to get a subsciption because they often sell out fast, but you get the idea. (The gansta speak sounded funny in my head coming for the short Japanese old lady whom I was talking to).

So I now have a subscription and pick up new issues every Wednesday.

    Here is the stipulations:
    A) Its a weekly magazine, so a 6 month subscription is $93. A year is like $167
    B) Every time I get an issue its already 3 weeks old, other wise the sub price is doubled because they are fedexed to the store.
    C) I have to pick up the mags as opposed to them shipping them, to get them shipped is hella expensive also.
    D) I will either pay a penalty or pay for shipping when I move back to Boston.

Look on the bright side, cool gaming magazines EVERY WEEK and an incentive to stay up to date on my Japanese! Woohoo!

(Expect cover/ad/picture/whatever scans in the future.)

Now here is my question: What Japanese gaming magazines are there out there and which should I get an subscription to?

I am interested in Neo Geo Freak, is it still around? What else is there?

The only mags they had there for gaming is Famitsu Xbox (two month's worth of issues in fact) and I need to know what else is good.

PS: WHat got me started on the Famitsu kick was a couple nights ago a coworker was about to throw away 6 months of RECENT famitsu magazines, 20+ issues literally unread. Of course I took all of them home and am thoroughly enjoying them. Let me know what you guys think.

Hecks no, Homey G. That shizzat went ker-ploopizzle about.. a year ago? Two years ago?

That shizzle goes for big G's on da Internet nowadays... And it's hellishly rarizzle, too. Many issues sell for about 20 beans each (and most don't come with the original posters)....

I have one issue of Neo geo Frizeek... Nifty magazizzle just to have.

As for Famitsu, how is the content? How thich is each magazizzeline?

    ARCADIA GOD DAMN IT.

You are getting a pretty decent price for the issues, though, so that's cool.

MS each Famitsu has about 300 pages, a bit more than half of it devoted to actual game content... the rest is ads and the other (ie non-gaming) features they run.

I was thinking about picking up Dengeki O but each issue seems thin and PS2-content heavy... and if I want a J PS2 mag I can just get Hyper PS2 or Dengeki PS2 (or Famitsu PS2 but my local store has a shitload of Famitsu XBox instead).

Oh, I forgot: Neo Freak is long dead. It ended ... I think just about after KOF2000 came out on cart.

  4. Oh ... and Famitsu just plain sucks. I don't care what you say but any magazine that gives Grandia Xtreme and Sakura Taisen 4 such high scores (both games a middle finger to their respective series), is worse than GamePro.

  5. If Famitsu sucks so bad, what 300 page weekly magazine would you suggest I get in its stead?

Also, how often do issues of Arcadia come out. I'll get a sub as long as its monthly and not weekly, I'm not made of cash.

What other mags are there out there? Compare them to US mags if possible.

    Famitsu = EGM?
Arcadia = Arcade Magazine? (for which there is no American equal?)
Famitsu Xbox = Official US Xbox Magazine I would assume.

Bingo. I have an issue, and while I can't read a damned thing in Japanese I still the magazine is incredible to at least look at. And I don't mean Play incredible to look at, I mean good content-releated related stuff to find. I'd love a subscription to Arcadia, myself. It's Monthly, btw.

Besides, you can't mess with the magazine which provides us with such great pictures as:
