Thread: Explosions in the Sky

  1. Sigur Ros and Explosions are different enough that it is ok to like both of them, you know.

  2. Sigur Ros and Explosions are both awesome, and music isn't a zero-sum game. BT's This Binary Universe does the everything better than Sigur Ros, so buy that instead.

I'm glad I saw this. I only have Suddenly I Miss Everyone and Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place (I like the former more), but yeah, good shit. It's definitely up there on my summertime listening rotation with Bullion's Pet Sounds (In The Key of Dee)

They do the crescendo better imo.

    Try Takk.
I heard and liked some Sigur Ros forever ago, but think I got turned off when they toured with Radiohead. Maybe I'll give this "Takk" a whirl.

I think Explosions might go out of their way *not* to do the crescendo thing sometimes (like Slint was said to), but it can be frustrating as hell. I'd chalk it up to them just not being overly skilled song writers except again, something like "catastrophe and the cure" would dispute that.

I want to pay a band to rewrite and re-record the second track, "Yasmin the Light," from Those Who Tell the Truth.... The last half is sooooo good whose goodness would be amplified considerably if they transitioned into super heavy mode and extended the song for another minute.

  4. There's a band called Rosetta that do the crescendo great. It's a bit screamy though...

  6. Not bad, but if ever there was a band that needed to lose their vocals...

I can abide the most obnoxiously demonic death metal growl, but the "hardcore" or "screamo" or whatever style fills me with the urge to hunt down the "singer" and rip out his esophagus.

Have they invented software that can seamlessly remove vocals yet? I need that shit.

  7. Sort of.

Man, I know what you're saying, but I think you're so wrong about this one.

It's gotten to the point where I have so much music that I just don't have time in my life to not listen to my favorite stuff anymore. When I wind up ranking bands like explosions/ros/godspeed it's not out of pretension, but because I inevitably keep picking one band to listen to over the others when I'm in the mood for that sort of thing.

Of course I always make time to listen to new stuff. Man I dropped 100 bux on merch at shows this week. So much new stuff to listen to.

There are no rules, only consequences.

  10. There is a New Zealand band that does this crescendo shit really well called Jakob:

There is also an Aussie band sorta like this called Grey Daturas who do amazing live shows. They're like a cross between drone and this sort of crescendo driven post rock. Its a band made of 3 drummers, and they have no songs, they just make swelling music for however long their sets go for. They do not come across nearly as good in the studio as they do live, and there are no good videos of them on youtube that I can see, but if you get the chance to see these guys live I urge you to check it out.
