I never played CoD2, but I hated MW and MW2.
They're just way too restrictive.
HL2 isn't much more than a linear sequence of set pieces, but at least you have some flexibility in how you deal with them.

I don't recall any physics-based puzzles in COD. Or any puzzles at all, for that matter.
Oh, you mean like stacking bricks to make a ramp? Thrilling.
Hey man, that was back when Source was showing off that objects not only had volume but weight values too! You couldn't just stack cups and plastic shit on there!
HL2 is great.
I used to think it was overrated. Then I realized I had played it from start to finish five separate times and enjoyed every minute of it.
I played it start to finish once and really enjoyed about 2/3 of it. I've tried to play through about five times since and can never make it more than an hour or two in before I get bored and can't bring myself to go back.
Yeah, I'm still a big fan. The minute to minute combat may not be quite as engaging as some other games but there's something to be said for brilliant world design and pacing*. And oh god the gravity gun is still tops.
*The boat is a good time too! Kill yourself.
It's still a great game - but heavily scripted games are a dime a dozen now. The character models still look better than anything. Valve are the only ones who can do realistic looking eyeballs and faces
