Yeah and it was awesome looking except for the menus.

I would imagine this done properly could look even better though and run way better. Emulating XII got super choppy in certain places and some spell animations got fucked. Also sound would freak the fuck out when you did certain summoning animations.

I still have unopened copies of FFXIII, Anthology, Origins and Chronicles on the PlayStation. I've opened IX for some reason, but I know I didn't play it.

You should! It's good. I felt like it was super underrated when it came out... seemed like I was the only one in existence saying it was better than 7 and 8, let alone the best FF game... but nowadays I see a lot of people saying that it's among their favorites.

I might have to check out the PC port.
I always thought it looked cool, but I had already gotten rid of My PS1 by the time it came out.
VII has those weird clashing visual styles and nonsensical melodrama, VIII seemed like a more consistent and solid game, but the setting just isn't all that compelling to me, but IX has that whimsical classic fantasy vibe. And Orco.

Well the battle system is clunky and feels unresponsive because of the secondary timer after you select an action. The writing and characters shit all over the previous games thanks to a much better translation.

Final Fantasy IX is a great game. It was Square running on all cylinders.

That said I can't get excited about this considered the poops Square has been dropping on PC lately, including the FF6 port that just came out.
