1. It's not marketing. It's the term the engineers at Apple chose to use, just like how Microsoft chose programs.
2. Nobody has to do anything. If Microsoft wants to ditch their nomenclature and use Apple's, that's on Microsoft.

The whole thing on home computers has been rewritten where most instances of program or software has been replaced with "software application" and it's being applied to any software that runs in a visual os.
That is a fairly new thing. No one would have talked that way 10 years ago.

I found this article about how the Steam version of FFVI is constructed interesting. I suspect some of the other versions are the same but are obviously harder to mess with.
That's really cool. I'm looking forward to what the modding community has in store for that game, it could end up turning it into the remake I've always wanted but knew Square 2016 couldn't pull off.
