Unless you're buying an i7 for its integrated graphics for some reason, like watching 4K Netflix on a HTPC, then it offers nothing new over skylake.
I'd say that the last 3 haven't offered much improvement since Haswell. I got my 4790k in 2015, and since then Intel has released the 5775c, 6700K and now 7700k.

Shit, my OC'd 2500k is hanging right in there with the newer mid-range chips.
I'm still rocking my old 2500k @ 4.7 Ghz in the living room. I've had all 4 cores pegged out to 100% on a few games though.
It looks like the new CPUs are about 25% more powerful than the old 2x00 ones. Which is nuts.
More like 50%, but still, it's been like 6 years.
