I was going to register my Counterstrike Source product key on Steam, but it's asking me to insert the game disc. Is that just a one time thing, or will I need to insert the disc every time I install the game?
My next system won't have an optical drive, so if the disc will be needed every time, I'll just sell this copy and buy the game again through Steam.

There's no real contradiction, though. The AMD guy is just pointing out some of the shortcomings of DirectX. He never suggested that OpenGL was any better.

I'm kind of surprised that it's asking for the disc at all.

Regardless, you won't need the disc once it's in your account.

Has anyone gotten the new Steam security thing to not be irritating? Every time I boot up my PC I get an e-mail saying that Steam is being accessed on a new computer. It gives me a code, but the Steam client never asks for it. I like the idea of the feature, but it's irritating the shit out of me, since I can't get it to stop e-mailing me.

Other than the above annoyance, Steam is about to get even more awesome with video recording and potential iOS/Android support.

Support ticket IMO. That security thing has been working fine for me.

I signed up for the SteamGuard beta a day or two before it went live. I never had to enter an email code on my main PC but I did when I tried to log in to steampowered.com from a computer at work.

I don't really get what the alternative is. How else can you reconcile such disparate hardware and architecture? I get why low-level coding would allow PCs to do more, but it seems completely impractical with dozens upon dozens of different cards on the market.

Among other deals, Steam has the Gothic Complete Pack for $18.75 right now. I haven't played any of those, but I am struggling with whether I will ever have the time, even though it's a great price.
