Thread: Official PC Thread

  1. Square/Eidos should handle all PC ports. Sleeping Dogs and Just Cause are practically flawless.

  2. I have a technical question.

I installed D3DOverrider to use Vsync and Triple buffering together (since the option in the nVidia drivers is for OGL only) and was using Crysis 1 as a test since it was easy to enable the frame counter and because I get slightly less than 60 FPS in this game. This is supposed to keep your FPS at the normal level while introducing a small amount of input lag. It appears as though it is simply not putting the TB on because the framerate is getting cut down. Does anyone know which part of the setup my problem might lie?

It's also weird because my refresh rate is 60 yet it caps to 24, which I thought it was supposed to be 60/n (so I'd expect 30). 24 is 72/3 and I'm pretty sure this plasma is not 72 Hz.

  3. Triple buffering + vsync allows you to get framerates at something other than 60/30/15 at the cost of slight input lag so seeing 24 FPS on a 60Hz monitor is not a surprise. I have no idea why you'd be be getting a lower framerate with triple buffering than without because that doesn't make any sense.

  4. I am testing in a scene at about 52ish FPS. It's never going close to 30. If VSync is on with double buffering, I expect 30. With triple buffering I expect something close to 45-50.

My only conclusion is that TB is not working. My only thinking is that this is an OEM card and just maybe D3DOverider isn't pointing to the correct spot in my registry. But I don't have to hack anything for nVidia to recognize the card on their site, so IDK

None of this would be so bad if Crysis 1 didn't have what looks to be the worst amount of tearing in history. 24 FPS is unbearable though.

  5. Well, can you see tearing?

In my experience, hearing that little chime as the game loads means triple buffering is working and I will not see any tearing. I don't really have any other advice short of trying other games to see if it's a consistent problem.

edit: Oh, and there's a thread on GAF specifically about triple buffering. TNL doesn't have all that many people into the tech side of PC stuff so that may be a good place to look.

  6. No, there is definitely no tearing. But there is no reason I can think of with my limited knowledge that says I should get anything other than the two FPS values I said before. I am going to check that thread again. Another thing may be because Crysis is a 64 bit app and this version says it doesn't work with 64 bit apps yet, but this is the newest version and people seem to use it.

I also hate the fact that most people that say thing on the internet have no idea what they are talking about. It's so annoying to see 95% of posts in Google be completely wrong

  7. That 64 bit thing may be important. I don't think I have any 64 bit game executables (the Steam version of Crysis is 32 bit) so I don't know how they work with D3DOverrider.

  8. This is the Steam version, so I guess that is out.

Not going to buy a 120 Hz screen just so I don't have to disable Vsync to remove most tearing

The Vsync part is working because I have it off in the game and in the driver panel and it's locked in Crysis when I have D3D open and not when it's closed

  9. Heh I feel stupid. After a while I gave up and started searching for Crysis 24 FPS and if you ALT+ENTER it'll fix itself. Works fine now

It actually is a bug in both 1 and 2

  10. Hotline Miami is an amazing game. Awesome gameplay. Great music. Went through a marathon session over the weekend to finish it and I'm going through the game again to get all the A+ records. I'm glad the hype was justified. Also, regarding that soundtrack: the ogg files are freely available in the Hotline Miami folder (thanks, Rock Paper Shotgun).
