You know those aren't your only two options, right? You can set it to Windows MIDI, which by default uses the samples of an old Roland Sound Canvas anyway and sounds pretty good in most old games. MT-32 supported custom samples, which is why it sounds a little nicer in games designed for it (esp. late 80s/early 90s), but general midi still smahes Adlib mode.
In Space Quest 3/KQ4, it's more of a dilemma because they predate (and therefore don't support) General MIDI. MT-32 was actually the first consumer level sound card on the market, which makes it pretty amazing how well it's held up.
