I started watching the anime too and i would have to say they're pretty much tied right now...
Truth be told I don't watch many series. I only watch a show if I really liked the manga, and I don't deal with filler shit as I avoid that garbage like the plague. But whenever I do watch anime it seems like something get's screwed up from the comic. Hellsing and Berserk are wonderful examples of this, and it seems like death note is soon to join their ranks.

Besides the gay part, that episode was masterfully done. Since I didn't know about the death of L and Watari, my draw practically dropped at how it was done. Episodes 22-25 are fucking amazing.
Also, the comment to series dragging stuff on, usually applies only to shonen because they're so fucking long.
True, but that seems to be comparitively rare. There's also oddities like the X movie which made up its own ending since the manga was nowhere near being done at the time.Isn't the Berserk anime the story of when he was younger and totally different? No the berserk anime is the band of the hawks arc, the only problem is they changed a fuck ton of things. The whole thing felt rushed and it's missing a lot of major characters. I just watched the first volume, and even with expectations I thought could never be met, I was blown the fuck away.
It's like Cowboy Bebop or GitS. Just perfect.
If that's the case it will fall into second tear status, which is still better than everything else being released right now; except for Beck.
Beck is one of the best animes ever.
