Thread: Virtua Tennis 3

  1. So I'm ranked #5 in career mode on this now. The computer gets pretty damn hard to beat once you get that high. It let me enter this special tournament called the 'King Tournament', and I got waxed of the court. I don't think I won a single point. This game is awesome though. Best tennis game ever.

#5 eh? Nice job -- the King tournament definitely sounds challenging. Speaking of which, I was going to ask if anyone here who had the game has unlocked King/Duke.

I faced off against him and Duke (the hidden characters) and they were super tough. But I figured out an effective strategy to take them down.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

Basically what you'll want to do is pick a character who's a relatively fast runner. (I picked Nadal). Use a short serve so that you'll have time to charge up to the net. Duke usually returns the shot in the opposite direction from where you originally released the serve, but on occasion -- he changes it up and returns it laterally from his position.

You have to be good at doing cross court shots/aiming -- otherwise you'll have a tough battle ahead of you. Basically you want to set up this type of shot in order to force a weak return shot that will end up a high ball. This will be your cue to fire back with a smash point -- which are pretty much guaranteed if executed correctly. I didn't focus on lobs, but if you can't make a powerful return in time, don't be afraid to use slice -- this will get you the opportunity to regain your footing and re-establish your positioning.

Oh, btw -- REALLY helpful tip here for everyone... if you're behind by a few points and don't think you'll win... simply hit the START button and select "Try Again", it will tell you that the progress won't be saved, but all it's going to do is restart the match between you and Duke (or King, if that's who you're facing).

Hope that helps. If anyone has any questions about VT3 - lemme know.

  3. So I won the King tournament, and I'm ranked #1 in career mode now. It's not too hard if you level up enough. I had my serve and forehand power maxed out when I did it. I still don't have King/Duke unlocked though. There's also quite a few achievements I don't have.

  4. Send me a msg on XBL - I can give you a few tips. But the short 'n sweet answer: play tournament mode, set match to 1 and do really well to face Duke. Play badly in the 5th event and let the CPU get the first 2 points (making it 30 to 0)... then drag the match out a bit and try to get a grade of C or lower. King should come out. Beating them will be easier if you've managed to successfully unlock/defeat one of 'em. Like I said -- drop me a line if you want some help...

  5. Thanks. Yeah, I actually read some of your strategies on another board. I'm going to try it tomorrow.

Good luck. Lemme know if you're stuck on anything else. Seems the biggest offender achievement wise are the Womens/Mens single player achievements. Numerous people on different forums are reporting that they've obtained them either online, playing a second player locally, in the career mode, or exhibition.
What makes it frustrating is that the requirements say "on default settings" and tons of people are struggling to figure out just what setting is considered default. LOL.

Usually there's like one or two ways to unlock an achievement, but Sumo Digital did some crazy shit in VT3.

  7. So is it pretty much accepted that this is the best tennis game ever? I certainly think so.

Oh hey bahn - any idea if there are crazy rackets & clothing like the first VT?

Seems there are a few people still divided between this and Top Spin. To me, I think it's a good balance between arcade/sim. I love the mini-games such as the one where you have to dodge the giant tennis balls and "bowling".

A lot of people aren't happy with the fact players in the game seem to dive a lot more than in TS2. When I first started playing, I was doing that a lot until I mastered the running shot, now I rarely dive. The online aspect is getting slam because you can use the secret characters Duke and King online and random cases of games locking up.

As for crazy gear, they give you a frying pan to use a a racket -- I believe that's after you complete the Ham & Eggs achievement. I haven't heard about any crazy outfits though, still working on getting everything in World Tour.

Well, I know there's a frying pan because I have it. Also, I played Duke and he kicked my ass. I did the get the score to 30-40 once, but that was it.

  10. Awesome.

Just in case you guys don't remember, the first game also had a wok racket (with matching Chinese outfit), along with a bowling pin & walkie-talkie sets. There was also a zebra and giraffe motif.

Maybe those - or something similar - are still to be found.

Feeding Time is one of the best mini-games ever. "OH NO!"
