Thread: The Games that made you the Gamer you are today

  1. Super Mario Bros 3. The first and only game I was ever given because I beat another. My uncle told me that if I beat Super Mario Bros., he'd get me this. Needless to say, two days after I beat the game, he showed up to my house with a fresh copy of SMB3. I remember firing it up around 5:00 in the evening. At one in the morning my Mom came in and was like "It's one o'clock, you're still awake?". First time I lost track of time playing a game.

    Metroid 2. One of those gem games you get as a kid where you didn't ask for it, but are too glad you got it. I remember this was under the tree along with my new Game Gear. This was my first Metroid game, and the first game to scare the shit out of me. I've yet to play a Metroid game I don't like. While Super Metroid is my favorite, this one doesn't get the respect it deserves.

    Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past My first Zelda game, and when I finally bought a Super NES in '94, this was the pack-in game. I remember that until Super Metroid, no other game sucked me into it's world like this one. Without this game, I would NEVER have given EarthBound a shot.

    Sonic The Hedgehog I'm referring to the Game Gear version. Back in 2nd Grade, this game was available as a mail-in game if you sent in the Game Gear UPC. I was immediately hooked, and back in '91 when I was given the choice of a Sega Genesis or a Super Nintendo, I chose the system that came with Sonic. I don't regret my choice.

    Ex-Ranza This was my first import game. While the controls were awkward at first, they very soon became second nature. This game was beautiful to look at, and it was disheartening to see how Japan at the time got full color manuals and detailed backstories, whereas we got shitty black and white bullshit. It gave me an appreciation for different ideas.

    MUSHA Another import, this game was just sick. The music, the graphics, everything just flowed. This game made me fall in love with shooters.

    Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine The first game me and my Mom would compete against together where we were both on equal ground. Me and her would also play Bomberman Online for Dreamcast, and we'd spend most of the time just trying to kill one another.

    Jet Grind Radio I don't know what it is, but there's just something about this game that kinda encapsulates everything about the Dreamcast for me. Different, stylish, overlooked, and immensely entertaining. I'd rather play this than any Tony Hawk game.

    If I did translate it, would you recognize it? Obviously the Seiken part is referring to the Sword of Mana which is referred to as Excalibur etc in its own prologue so would Sword of Mana Legend 2 work for you?

    Maybe I'm old or don't spend a lot of time on forums but I have no idea what an F-chan is.

  6. The first game for me was Space Invaders.

    My next two fave games that got me sucked in was Mr. Do and Dig Dug.

    I stopped playing in the arcades ... until I saw Tempest. This game re-invigorated my desire in video games and after that game I became an addict. When the "Crash" happened I stopped playing and just played really old games that I still had. Then I saw the Sega Master system and I picked up Fantasy Zone and after that it was truly over. Been playing ever since.

  7. Dragon Warrior- One and two, They're the first games I can remember playing, but I don't recall ever beating them. In one of our home videos when I'm like 3 you can see my sister playing Dragon Warrior with me on the bed watching her play it. I can recall when I was in Kindergarden in Texas you had a half day of school and that was all (I don't know if that's the norm anymore) and my day was in the afternoon. I would get up about 3 hours early and start playing through Dragon Warrior 2, I recall being near the very end but never actually finishing the game :/.

    Mario Brother's 3 - First game I recall ever beating, my sister and I put a good whole day into beating it, only to discover that after finally beating it again you get to play through it with an inventory of pewee's.

    Final Fantasy IV This was the game that officially got me hooked to RPGs from now and forever. Dragon warrior was great, but Kain was awesome, Rydia is one of my favorite characters of all time, and the story was so solid that I actually started reading more to see if I could find any stories I liked as much.

    Shining Force Game Gear, and Shining force 2 - The gamegear one is what first got me to love handhelds. I didn't have a gameboy at the time, and playing through this game anywhere I wanted, grandparents house, home on the couch, didn't matter. Was pure awesome. Shining Force 2 was my first experiance with Emulation. Which actually a friend of mine from Texas had come across the emulator, and the fact we were playing a Genesis game on a computer was amazing. (What's cool is that friend whom I had lost contact with when I moved to Ohio recently contacted me, <3 the internet)

    Warcraft 2 - First RTS game and what made me love the genre. Also the first game I played competitively against friends using the old direct connect method (lawl).

    Final Fantasy Tactics - First SRPG I played and the game that got me into the genre for the most part. Greatest story in a video game I have ever had the pleasure of playing.

    Starcraft - Starcraft pretty much changed my entire life. I wish this was an exaggeration, but it's not. I had just moved to Ohio and was living in a town house before we moved into our actual home, and I was playing on Battle.net First time I had made lots of friends online, and I even got into some of the sects of Roleplaying (lol dorky I know, but this stuff I could right a thesis on how Roleplaying in chatrooms shaped me and changed my life) and it all started with Starcraft/Battle.net.

    Counter-Strike - This was that first game I truly became addicted to, I wasn't obsessed with this game, I was addicted. Sure you went nights without sleep to play an RPG or something, but that was over once you beat it more often than not. This game I played die hard for a year or two, going two-three sleepless nights a week. And really it pretty much wore me out to the point where I can hardly do that anymore.

    Everquest - First MMO, I joined it 5 years in though so it wasn't the same experiance for me as I know for one of my friends who spent pretty much 5 years of his life into that game. It's what resulted in me playing WoW now, which is what I spend most my video game time doing.

    Also: I'd have to put a lot of my gaming habits on Tain. Until I had met him, Counter-strike and starcraft and some final fantasy was all I played. With him I started playing a lot larger variety of games, and became fond of games like VO:OT and Beatmania IIDX. Fighting games etc are in large part thanks to him as well.

    You should kick his ass for gaying you up with that Beatmania shit.

  9. Nah cause it was a short phase that's for the most part died out :P.

    Also: SWG was listening to my friend tell some stories about that, wish I had played it. unfortunately the guy who i knew that played it was total trash and so I never had any interest in the game.

  10. Popeye (Coleco Vision): First game i can remember playing

    Final Fantasy VII: My first 32-bit experience, and the my RPG (except the ones i played as a child that i didnt understand)

    Super Mario 64: I could have died of hunger sitting in front of it and wouldnt care

    Metal Gear Solid: I teared up

    TMNT II (NES): Many long hours played with friends

    Pro Wrestling (NES): see TMNT II

    Duke Nukem 3D: My parents had no idea what they had bought me (My mom went to the store and said "whats a good game for my son?" when we got our first computer). At that age I thought i was getting away with murder.

    Half-Life 2: Anyone who says games aren't art needs to play this.

    Deadly Towers; (I never knew a $1 game could make me so angry)

    Mechwarrior II

    Battletoads: never got more than a few screens into it without dying
