Thread: Best webspace/e-mail provider?

  1. Best webspace/e-mail provider?

I have really bad luck with webpages, but I suppose its been my fault for relying on free services. So now that I'm willing to pay for web space (and e-mail since my current one is going pay), I want the best, or at least the most reasonable. Don't know where to even start looking, so I need a few suggestions.

My webpage will be low traffic and under 50 meg in size (probably about 30 actually) and I won't need much space for e-mail either since I delete/save everything right away. I'd prefer to upload the webpage via ftp and web-based e-mail, but it's not too important. I'd also like some sort of domain, or at least a url that's easy to remember, but that's even less important.

Mainly, I want something that's hassle free as possible, and is not on a server that's constantly going down or messing up my webpage.

  2. I've yet to try these, but take a look.

  3. I’ve been all over the net looking for a good web host, so hopefully I can be of some help here.

First of all, here are some forums you can search through to find info on a good host that will fit your needs.

Now I can personally recommend two hosts to you:

    http://www.dreamhost.com (Linux / Apache)
    http://www.gearhost.com (Windows 2000 / IIS)

I’ve hosted with several companies and these two exceeded my expectations in terms of customer service, features and reliability (uptime). There are many cheaper hosts out there, but beware of the saying, “you get what you pay for”.

I’m pretty sure DreamHost will offer you a ‘yourdomain.dreamhost.com’ domain for free – and I think you get a free domain registration when you sign up anyway (and by the way, there are good sites out there that let you register domains for as little as $7 to $10 – no need to pay Network Solution’s outrageous $35 fee).

  4. I've always heard good things about rydia.net and cjb.net, but I don't know of anything else.

  5. For domains: http://www.godaddy.com - $8 or so

    For webspace: http://www.valuablehost.com
The plan I'm on is $15/mo for 1GB of space and 8GB of transfer. Unlimited domains and subdomains hosted (you still have to buy the domains though). It's pretty good. They've had a few weird things happen the past couple weeks (denial of service attacks and a DNS goof-up), but things seem to be returning to their normal excellent up-time. Support is good and continually improving. Check out http://forums.valuablehost.com - the admins post there reguarly.

Also, try http://www.hostsearch.com . That site will give you a good idea of what's out there.
