Romero is still bitter that Stibbons hit on his wife outside of the Nintendo booth at E3.
The general public isn't smart enough to do that. Unless you really know where to go you don't have good cheap options. Sure if every one was techno savvy then yes maybe you could build a CPU that's as good as a 360 or PS3. This is before things like monitors and other various things you need for a good comp.

The convenience of being able to buy a box you can chuck under your tv and keep the family entertained with won't be supplanted any time soon by the PC. PCs just aren't consumer-friendly tech, and they've been around long enough at this point that I'm wondering if they ever will be.

Fine I'll stop saying CPU like I have for years and call it a PC. I didn't know you'd come throwing the dictionary at me. So it's a personal computer not a central processing unit what-the-hell-ever.
Yeah because the whole world is loaded with HDTVs. Maybe if HD becomes the standard then yeah sure that wouldn't be a pc overtaking console barrier that it is now. Perhaps if people catch up to the fact that it is simple to put pc output on pretty much any tv then pc may overtake, I don't see that happening at least not for another few generations of consoles. Besides, as it stands now buying a quality HD tv is IIRC much more expensive than a simple pc monitor.
Even if they start giving out hdtvs in boxes of cheerios then you still have to convince an industry that's rife with profits from the whole "can't play Mario or God of War on anything else" and become a pc game maker, I dunno if the current companies in the biz would consider such a thing.
