Sony and its game division have had a rough year, but in the new fiscal year the PS3 and the game division are expected to make a big recovery, according to a consensus forecast of analysts. The PS3 is expected to help drive profits up fivefold for Sony. [Updated]

That's been discussed already. Once the Emotion Engine is removed from PS3 systems, backwards compatibility will be handled through software emulation, just like how the 360 handles it.

So essentially limited ass backwards compat that's a hassle compared to what it is now?

Software emulation could work properly with the right people behind the hardware, but this is sony we're talking about, and this ain't no home-brew emu.

What is the advantage of playing ps2 games on this thing anyway? I've heard that upscaling will cause lag from the system which is unavoidable.

umm, microtransactions, game library, accessory sales. They could also mean also indirectly, such as blu-ray sales and dominance, addition to PS2 userbase (ps3 still plays ps2 games = people can buy shit like god of war (god knows im doing that right now with the 360 and xbox games)), memory sticks, ect.

Maybe if PS3 sales were good enough to maintain the high price but they are not. It's not like I know jack shit about anything regarding the PS3's future so I should stfu but now seems to be the time for sony to bleed out if it's ass trying to lower the price. First party software is lacking big time as well and they need to fix that.

From what I've read in another board:

The PS3's forced 480p output on 480i-only PS2 games has built-in lag (2 frames) so using a PS3 to "Get around the lag" is a lost cause; the PS3 itself has built in lag in backwards compatibility mode when using HDMI/outputting 480p. You can read all about that here
