Google's a very progressive company. I actually interviewed with them and the entire company culture just screams laid back and easy going. Stuff like that swimming entry is pretty much par for the course for them.
It works well for them too. They hire the top talent in the world, give them a "playground" to have a blast in (it is official company policy, for example, that 20% of your work week is spent working on your own personal project, whatever you want), and they reap the rewards (gmail, google maps, almost all their big hits were originally personal projects of one employee) while simultaneously paying the lowest average salary in the industry.
