Just because it's become easier, doesn't mean it's still not hard. There's no make perfect skin texture button, there's no make perfect face model button. Did you look at the article and see how much work he put into it, and the amount of steps it took to accomplish. Just because you see it a lot doesn't mean it's easy. The simple fact of the matter is that there are a shit load more people doing 3D now a days than in the past and the number keeps growing. The sheer volume of resources online for learning to do 3D are also at an all time high, it's truly amazing how much people who do 3D want to share how to do it with others. To blow it off as not impressive just because you don't know anything about it is quite ignorant.

If he was featured on CGSociety then yes he is something special. CGSociety is probably the largest collection of industry professionals and if they decided to feature him then yes, there's something special there.

    I stand by my comment.

    Best. Fronting. Ever.
i agree with all of this. frog is just bitter.

You've never even opened a 3D art program, have you? Talent is nothing in the face of their GUIs and manipulation, it doesn't even enter into the equation until after a fuckton of training is done.

Artists are so fucking lazy. Pretty soon they're going to start using poseable models for shadows and other crap like that. Idiots.

I can't play guitar but I don't think everyone that can is good.

  5. Personally I don't think this takes any talent. Certainly plenty of hard work, drive and technical knowledge, but all he's done is almost succeed in duplicating a photograph. Why not save yourself the time and take a picture?

Being able to create textures like that != hard work, drive, and technical knowledge. While those three things damn well play a part in being able to produce CG of that quality, you're a blind fool if you don't think "simply recreating a photograph in CG" takes no talent.

But in this case it's more like "You can't play guitar, but you also don't think that anyone who is an amazing guitar player is any good because other people can do it too."

I didn't say he had no talent, just that his talent was not so uncommon that it needed to be brought to my attention.

Its especially impressive because this is apparently just a hobby for this guy. Not even a career.
Have you even used these programs? Maya feels slow and clunky to me in comparison to Zbrush. In Zbrush it feels like you're drawing in 3dimensional space, or like you're using clay to build up form. Maya and 3DSM feel like I'm using straight lines and rulers- they feel too clean and restricted. IMO stuff like Maya and 3DSM are better for making mechanical objects, and Zbrush absolutely blows them out of the water for creating organic forms. If you have any sculpting or painting background I find it hard to believe that you would rather make a model of a human in 3DSM than in Zbrush, because Zbrush feels WAY more natural and reduces your time spent modeling by a landslide.

  10. As usual, most people here are talking out of their ass about things they really have no clue about.
