Yeah, Bruce fucked up his back big-time with Good Mornings. Dude was in the hospital for months or something like that, all because he supposedly didn't warm-up enough. But I love how a simple weightlifting fuck-up wasn't "dramatic" enough when they shot Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, so they changed it to Bruce getting sucker-kicked in the back after winning a fight.
I'd say try Hyperextensions. Bodyweight exercises are almost always the safest, and I find you can control your form a lot more easily. And if you start getting stronger you can hold a plate while doing them (and if you want to try a strip set, drop the plate when you can't do any more reps and eke out a few more). I personally don't do much direct lower back work because I do a lot of other exercises that hit that area indirectly, such as T-Bar rows and shit.
