Fucking doctors. At least from my own personal experience unless something smacks them in the face they don't do a god damn thing. And that includes people I know who are doctors.

  3. There is a place for doctors but it's funny how often people want you to go to one when there's no good reason.

I had a cold a few weeks back and everyone was telling me that I should go, without insurance, to see a doctor. What the fuck is he going to do for a cold? You don't even prescribe medicine that treats the cause of a cold, just the symptoms. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on a doctor I got some fucking cold medicine at CVS so I'd feel better and now a few weeks later I'm totally fine. Or like my whole climbing thing right now, yeah I guess there's a one in a thousand chance I'm wrong, but if every single source anywhere talks about a super common thing that is happening to me just like it does to thousands of other people why the fuck would I go to a doctor just so he can tell me the same thing.

If shit is really wrong with you see a doctor, otherwise grow a dick and read up on how to make yourself better, just like they did. I guarantee no Doctor I'd go to took longer than it took me to figure out how to diagnose climber's elbow and he'd just tell me to do the same shit that all these sports doctors and professional climbers tell people to do.

I may have to get this now.

Got back from the doctor. Results were "perfect" in a lot of areas, but I apparently need a shit load more vitamin D in my diet and I need to cut back on the beer. I may also have a thyroid problem, but he thinks it may be a false positive since I didn't have any of the symptoms he mentioned nor any family history of thyroid problems. Going back in a few weeks for another follow-up.

Does anyone have suggestions on how I can get to about 4000 cal/day without making myself puke. I bought a 3lb tub of whey protein to help with recovery, but is there anything else I can get to help me reach my daily goal?

The point is, a doctor wouldn't need to take as long as you to diagnose climbers elbow. I come from a family of doctors and cannot discredit the amount of knowledge, education, and patience they need to do their job to the best of their ability and provide the proper diagnosis to someone. But like you said, there is a time and place for doctors, and something like a common cold is absolutely not the place for it.

Climbers elbow is also an acute orthopedic issue that can be fixed by proper strengthening of muscles, like you found out. That's something you can go to a physical therapist, or sports medicine specilist, and they can tell you. It absolutely is not something you need to see a doctor to diagnose. On the other hand, when it begins to turn into a chronic pain issue, that is when you should get in to see a doctor. I'm going through the same exact thing right now with the bursitis in my knees. Even with a father who is an orthopedic surgeon, he says there's not much they can do about it because of the limited amount of treatment options there are aside from physical therapy, cortisone, or arthroscopic surgery. After 2 years of dealing with it and complaining about it to him I asked him for a reference, and he even preempted the reference (after speaking with the doctor about my condition) with "don't be disappointed if there isn't anything he can do except for physical therapy". Not because he didn't know how to diagnose me, or because he doesn't want me to heal, but because some of the minor chronic pain issues related to exercise (like prepatellar bursitis and climbers elbow) cannot be treated directly and instead have to be "managed".

Moral of the story, you don't need to see a doctor immediately for something like that. But don't let your shit get out of hand if it doesn't start getting better, I'd hate to see you end up with chronic pain, because as anyone who has or had it knows it's a miserable thing.

edit: Keep in mind, what we are dealing with is significantly different than what Josh is dealing with (though you know that). So him seeing a doctor vs you seeing a doctor for a cold are very different things. My reference to them not diagnosing things that don't slap them in the face was more in reference to very innocuous and puzzling conditions. I have seen it with my mom specifically, and it's clearly something that Josh is unfortunately going through also.
