They could be. I recall them being exp at main retailer's, but cheaper at freds and similar.
I seem to remember friends having the Radio Shack not-Shockwave. Probably was cheaper.
Mine was from China. It was a bootleg Blaster. Dude played tapes for real. I also had bootleg Dinobots.

There used to be Sears Surplus stores too. That returns went to. I got a bunch of cool shit there for cheap.
And 'Most' stores. Not sure if those were national.
