  4. I don't normally care much about custom figures, but I was poking around HissTank.com and saw a thread where dude had posted pics of a 4-inch tall custom he did of Arnold's character from Predator, and I thought it was so awesome that I contacted him and had him make me one as well. It's put together from GI Joe and Marvel figures, with a custom-sculpted Arnold head. It came in the mail yesterday...check it:

I might have him do a Commando figure next.

  5. That's pretty awesome. Perhaps most impressive for a 4" figure is that I instantly recognized it before I read your post.

  6. Yeah, looking at the pics, it's hard to believe how small it really is. I'm actually blown away by the paint job on the head. I mean, he got the pupils in the eyes fucking PERFECTLY. How the fuck can anyone even work with paint on such a small scale?

  8. Here, we have D-Arts Zero Version 2 and D-Arts Megaman X. Let's start this review with the packaging.

    PACKAGING:

The packaging for these guys are done just as you'd expect them to be if you are or were a fan of the series, with artwork-based poses and references to the games. X gets a majority blue-colored box, while Zero gets one that is mostly red. You get a clear viewing window of the toys themselves and a few of the accessories that they each come with, although the majority of the extras are covered up by the packaging. One side of the box shows a side mug-shot profile of each character close-up, and the other side depicts a pose derived from their past character artwork. The back of X's packaging actually has some of the information on X's stats that are displayed during the boot-up and intro sequence of the first Mega Man X game. The back of Zero's packaging shows his iconic pose from the JPN import cover art of Mega Man X4.

They both come with a variety of parts and accessories.

    ACCESSORIES:

    X comes with:

    3 Interchangeable faces
2 Blaster Effects (1 large blast & 3 normal X-Buster shots attached to
    one another)
    4 Interchangeable hands
    2 Regular Arms
    1 Blaster Arms
    1 Blaster Effects adapter
    1 Instructions Sheet

    Zero V2 comes with:

    3 Interchangeable faces
    6 different hands
    3 Z-Sabers (1 straight/pointed, 1 straight/rounded, and 1 crescent-shaped beam)
    1 Blaster Arms
    2 Regular Arms
1 Blast Effects adapter (for use with Zero V1's or X's Buster shots)
    1 Instructions Sheet

    APPEARANCE/DESIGN:

The toys look like their in-game counterparts in every aspect.

X is crafted in his default MegaMan X-series appearance; blue, and without any acquired armor(s). Perfectly portrayed, he features the proper coloring of white highlights, with a lighter blue torso, biceps, and upper leg areas. He also has his characteristic red helmet jewel (which in the games, flashes when he is low on health).

Zero V2 is shown in his MegaMan X2 ~ forward incarnation. This includes his iconic Z-Saber of which there are 3 different variations: 1 straight pointed, 1 straight rounded-tip, & 1 crescent-shaped. As for the reasoning of including two nearly identical Z-Sabers, (the straight pointed and straight rounded-tip) I'm going to agree with one Youtube reviewer's speculative guess that the straight Z-Saber w/rounded tip was included for safety issues during display. The tip is quite pointy on the other straight saber. I like how D-Arts catered to those of us who have a slight OCD for these seemingly trivial collector matters. Thank you, designers!

As I previously stated, they both look EXACTLY the same as their in-game/onscreen counterparts! Zero V2 has his gold-highlights, green chest globes, and shielded shoulders. Additionally (I'm SO glad they didn't forget this little tidbit), the handles of all 3 of Zero's Z-Sabers are REMOVEABLE so that you can stick the handle into Zero V2's "backpack" for when he isn't using it. You can see that in my photos.

    POSEABILITY/DETAILS:

The poseability of these guys are BOTH EXTREMELY well done! I don't think I could ask for anything more in this department from these two, other than one minor issue with Zero's hair. They can be put into just about any pose that you can think of that is within the range of normal human (or Reploid based on a human, even though X & Zero aren't technically Reploids...ah you get the point) flexibility, as you can see in the pictures that I have included. They are double-jointed at the elbows and knees, which gives them that extra range needed to be "realistic". The double joints themselves are covered by "sleeves" that make the limbs appear smooth and unseperated. A+ effect on those parts.

    Double-Joints/Sleeves

    INTERCHANGEABILITY:

Each of the figures currently available (including Full-Armor X and Zero V1) have parts that are able to be used between figures. Removing and re-attaching limbs is a snap. You just simply pull them out of the sockets, and you will see the tabs and holes and how they are attached. For example, if you have Full Armor X, you can take regular X, swap out the legs, and portray him with simply the Dash Boots (as you'd acquire in the Chill Penguin Stage of MMX). Or if you want, you can take Zero V1's Z-Buster (that's what I'm going to call his projectile weapon arm) and give it to regular X, remove Zero's waist and one arm, and portray Zero's death in MMX.

The "blast effects adapters", as I like to call them, are used for when you want to attach the "shot/firing" effects that come with X. These also come with Armor X and Zero V1). When you look into Zero's and X's blaster arms, they both have colored lens that are shown in their many pieces of art. However, those lenses can be removed, and the adapters (with a hole for the firing effects) can then be attached. This way, all the figures in this toy series can use them.

For both toys, the faces can be changed out by simply removing the front of the helmet, and then the face (the neck is attached to the back half of the head), swapping out the faces, and then simply replacing the front of the helmet. True to their in-game and artwork representations, Zero's eyes are blue and X's eyes are green. The heads come with variations such as teeth gritted, mouth(s) open, eyes looking towards another direction, or the regular neutral face.

    CONS:

The only hint of a gripe that I have about these toys comes from the Zero V2, and it is a very miniscule one - more along the lines of "constructive feedback" for the next toys. I think that if his hair had an extra joint, or somehow a little more flexibility (say around the middle of it), it would help with a lot of the poses. His ponytail can move up and down a few degrees in the back of his head, and side to side just a LITTLE, but overall, there is not much play in that regard, so making him look upwards can be a bit of a task if you don't position his hair slightly off to the side when doing so. Even so, this oversight won't make you enjoy him any less.

In short, if you can think of a pose, then you can probably position these guys in them, as seen in the shots that I have taken. I am a HUGE MMX fan, and I am EXTREMELY pleased with how thoroughly these guys were explored. I'm having so much fun with them, it's very hard to leave them in any one pose for any particular length of time. The first day I got them, I tinkered with them for close to 3.5 hours before I finally forced myself to put them down to go to sleep. I can tell you for a fact that when the day comes that I finally get rid of my figures and Transformers, I'm going to hang onto these guys. They're just that good!

These guys are WELL worth the $50 apiece (shipped) that I've spent on the
both of them. These are probably the most fun toys I've purchased in a LONG LONG TIME. If you're familiar with D-Arts or Revoltech, then you will not be dissappointed. If you're NOT familiar with them, and you want to get started, then there is no better toy series to start with. You'll be amazed! They were well-worth the (excruciating) wait!

    FINAL FEEDBACK:
    ----
Pros: Very fun set, well designed, fun to pose and play with, variety of accessories, swappable parts between characters, well-packaged, beautiful to display, easy to assemble and disassemble, and VERY HARD TO PUT DOWN ONCE YOU GET AN IDEA IN YOUR HEAD - you'll have 100 poses you'll think of, and you'll want to try every one of them, just like I'm thinking of doing now

Cons: Zero's hair could use a bit more flexibility to help with certain poses

Rating? An EASY 9.8 out of 10! Funfactor and playability is off the charts!

    EXTRA INFO:

VILE/Vava is coming within the next month or so! GET YOUR WALLETS READY! If they decide to do Sigma (hopefully V1), I'll get him as well, but Vile is actually my favorite mainline villian in the X series, so this works just fine for me. I'd actually like to see bring some of the other Mavericks to toy form as well. I think either Magma Dragoon, Commander Yammark, Storm Eagle, Neon Tiger, or Dark Dizzy/Necrobat would all make excellent D-Arts toys. I wouldn't mind seeing Magna Centipede as well, but he'd have a LOT of joints to work with.

    REVIEW OVER! Victory stance time!
